OLY1/health Auckland Uni - common Gen Ed's and tips to choose one

If you're enrolled or planning to study at the University of Auckland, you know that you have your compulsory papers as well as a General Education paper.

A Gen Ed paper is pretty much like an 'option' at high school, where it is supposed to be unrelated to your degree but is designed to broaden your learning and interests.

This post is targeted towards those who are doing Biomed, Health Sci, Nursing or any other healthcare profession and are considering how to pick a Gen Ed paper.

Common Gen Ed papers chosen by OLY1 students are Philosophy, International Business, Maori, and Pharmacy.

Here are my tips for choosing a Gen Ed:

1. Interesting

You are paying like $700 so you might as well take something you enjoy. Don't have everything revolve around improving your chances of getting into Med or whatever course you want to do.

2. Clashes

If you've tried enrolling in a Gen Ed but it clashes with your compulsory courses, try and find one that doesn't clash. Prioritise the compulsory courses before your Gen Ed course.

3. Easy

For those of you doing OLY1 and wanting to get into Medicine, Pharmacy or Optometry, bear in mind that your GPA does matter and you don't want to take a really difficult Gen Ed that may bring down your GPA. In fact, most OLY1 students prioritise 'How Easily Can I get A+" when choosing their Gen Ed.

4. Helpful

While it's unrelated to your course, it's ideal if it can benefit your application. For example, I did Maori130G as my Gen Ed paper and its content regarding New Zealand's history of colonisation, the Treaty of Waitangi, and Maori health and disparities (which will also be briefly covered in Poplhlth111) helped me in my interview where I had a question along the lines of "what are your ideas of some disparities between Maori and non-Maori health and how would you fix them."

I hear that Philosophy is similar to UMAT so may help with that.

Pharmacy will also cover some basic anatomy and physiology, and shares content with Medsci142 therefore decreasing the amount of extra study needed.

I hope this gives you a guide of the best Gen Ed option to choose!
