Poem: With you, without you

This is a poem that I wrote to express my feelings of anxiety when I was feeling down and stressed. Writing serves as an emotional outlet for me and allows me to sift through my concerns.

With you, without you
With you,
I am a bird.
Trapped.
I try to soar,
but you hold me in the palm of your hand, as I breathe the stale, stagnant air.
I look up at you from below,
your fingers surround me.

And just like every other day, I am
imprisoned.

Without you,
I am a bird.
Free.
I try to soar,
and I can, rising up higher than ever before, as I breathe the crisp, fresh air
I watch you from above,
your fingers grasp at thin air.
And for the first time in forever, I am
alive.
