6 tips: How To Study for Premed/OLY1 Auckland Uni

So you're about 2 weeks into the semester and you probably feel like this.

And Mel's rapping isn't helping.

So now is a good time to start thinking about study techniques.

1. As a general rule, go by what the lecturer is saying and what they have on the slides. Sometimes course guide notes are written by previous lecturers and haven't been updated by the new lecturer.

Textbooks aren't really necessary and don't go memorising everything in there. It's WAY too much detail. Only use it if you really don't understand something.

2. It's a good idea to get a copy of the slides - either hard copy or electronically and just annotate. You can then make notes after and learn from that.

3. Start trying to pinpoint what is emphasised by the lecturer. They might have specific phrases or may spend particularly more time on a topic. It's likely that'll come up in the test.

4. As for whether you want to write on refill or use a laptop/tablet - that's personal preference. Just make sure you find something that works for you and stick to it. You might find that you'll have to change it for different lecturers since some have info overload and others may not have enough.

5. Don't stress too much if you didn't get everything - you never will. Just go back and listen to the recordings and fill it in if you think it's important. Listening to recordings on 1.5x or 2x is a good way to save time.

6. Don't remember everything the lecturer says. They don't expect you too anyway. Use your own judgement to see what seems most important. Learning objectives are usually a good guide.

Hope it helps! Uni is a HUGE step up from high school and everything is so much more condensed. You WILL feel overwhelmed but that's okay! I do, and I'm in my third year already. Just work through everything slowly and you'll get there in the end.

All the best.
