MBChB II at Auckland: a brief overview of what to expect

If you've received acceptance, CONGRATULATIONS! If that doesn't apply but you're still interested in what medical school at Auckland is like, then here is a super condensed version of the following book. 1. Freshers camp (or the new name) It'll be an interesting weekend. You probably won't remember much of it. Interpret that how you will but have fun! 2. Orientation They'll give you a brief outline of the year, talk about assessments, and miscellaneous things. Remember things or take notes as you can write about some things, such as the Whakanoa , in your portfolio. 3. Module tests You'll have topics and tests at the end of those but no exam. Clinical Student Attachment - Year 4: General Surgery

So I haven't posted in a long time, mainly because I felt that I had nothing valuable to add. But I've started fourth year = start of clinical years. FINALLY. Actually being in hospitals and feeling like you can make a difference (but not really because you still know close to nothing). At Tauranga Hospital this year, I started off with General Surgery. What I plan to do is just give a breakdown of all the attachments in separate posts (specific to Tauranga) and if you have any questions, leave them below. For General Surgery in 4th year, the attachment is 6 weeks long. The assessments are: 1. 2 supervisor reports 2. POGS - hand in Monday after your attachment 3. Formative OSCE (i.e. doesn't count, but will be good for the end-of-year OSCE) - mid week 4 at Middlemore Hospital 4. Realities of medicine + my own doubts: Is Medicine Really For Me?

If you're reading this, you're probably thinking about a career in medicine or healthcare. You also might not be entirely sure what you're getting yourself into. I know that even as a student, I'm still looking at this career through rose-tinted spectacles. I've definitely had moments where I've found myself sincerely questioning whether medicine is really what I want to do for the rest of my life. Last year, especially, I constantly experienced pervasive thoughts that maybe I would have been better doing accounting or just something else, especially since I've been seeing a lot of my friends graduating, starting work, and getting ahead in their careers, while I'm still studying. There were moments when I felt incredibly overwhelmed with the content and thought - what's the point of all this study? Should I have chosen a different degree? Is it too late to change?
